Joint
ITU-CITEL Forum on “Enabling an ICT business environment in the
Americas Region” |
The Joint ITU-CITEL Forum on “Enabling an ICT business environment
in the Americas Region” will take place on April 21, 2008, in
Washington D.C., United States of America, at the Organization of
American States headquarters.
The goal of the event is to
strengthen dialogue and exchange of experiences between
Administrations and the Private Sector on the improvement of mutual
cooperation for the telecommunication/ICT development in the Americas
Region and, the development of a policy and regulatory environment
that promotes industry/ICT development and investments, with a special
attention to ICT expansion in rural and remote areas.
The event is
open to participants of the public and private sector and regional and
international organizations interested in the subject. .

The XI meeting of the
Permanent Consultative Committee II:
Radiocomunications including
Broadcasting will be held in the Organization of
American States headquarters in Washington DC,
United States of America from April 22
to 25, 2008.
At this meeting we will begin the analysis
of the implementation
of the WRC-07 decisions, we will estudy the results
of the First Conference Preparatory meeting
(CPM-11-1)
that took place en Geneva
on November 19 and 20, 2007
and we will establish the structure for the preparation
of
WRC-11.

Regional Development Forum 2008: “Bridging the ICT standardization gap
in developing countries”, WTSA-08
Preparatory Meeting for the Americas region,
meeting of the PCC.I Rapporteur Group to prepare WTSA-08 |
An
ITU Regional Development Forum, focused in 2008 on “Bridging
the ICT standardization gap in developing countries” and
followed by the Americas region WTSA-08 Preparatory Meeting,
will take place at the Anatel (National
Telecommunications Agency of Brazil) headquarters in Brasilia, Brazil,
from 19 to 20 May 2008 and from 21 to 22 May 2008,
respectively, at the kind invitation of Anatel.
These events will be followed by a one-day meeting of the Rapporteur
Group of the Permanent Consultative Committee I: Telecommunications (PCC.I)
of the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) responsible
for the preparation of common proposals for WTSA-08. This meeting will
open at 9:00 hours on May 23 2008 at the same venue of the above
mentioned events.

Emergency communications have been identified
as one of the five key priorities of the ITU. The decisions of the RA
and WRC are considered by many to be critical steps in the
identification of practical measures to deal with disaster situations,
particularly at the very early stages of emergency relief
intervention.

IPTV
standardization activities in ITU-T |

Given that IPTV is becoming an increasingly important service in
the market, and the industry is facing challenges from technical as
well as regulatory issues, ITU-T received proposals to strengthen its
work on IPTV standardization. ITU-T convened an open consultation
meeting in Geneva, 4-5 April 2006 on IPTV service and its
standardization. The meeting was well attended by both ITU-T Members
and non‑Members.

Convention on the International Amateur Radio Permit (IARP) and
Protocol of Amendment |
Radio Communication - including communications by
radio amateurs - is regulated on an international level by the
International Telecommunication Union, ITU, a United Nations body. The
ITU Radio Regulation’s definition of the Amateur Service is "A Radio
Communication Service for the purpose of self-training,
intercommunication and technical investigations carried out by
amateurs; that is, by duly authorized persons interested in radio
technique solely with a personal aim and without pecuniary interest."

government so as to promote remote areas and social inclusion. Among

community of users around the world.

Anatel adopts standard for certification of Digital TV
transmitters |
The
Executive Council of Anatel, at its 472nd meeting, adopted a Standard
for the Certification and Approval of Transmitters and Retransmitters
for the Brazilian Land-Based Digital Television System (ISDB-T), the
outcome of Public Consultation 830, held from October 24 to November

Chile:
Government grants subsidies for Internet and telephone
connection in Chiloé, Torres del Paine, and 80 low-income
neighborhoods |
Delivering digital connectivity to isolated areas and low-income urban
areas is the purpose of this investment of over 3,700 million pesos. President
Michelle Bachelet pointed to this step as part of the country’s new
Digital Strategy 2007-2012. Neighborhoods, small and medium-sized
enterprises, schools, emergency medical stations, and kindergartens
are the priorities for the projects that are to be operational in

Brazil:
Regulations on efficient spectrum use are subject of public
consultation |
The
National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) is receiving suggestions
from the public on the proposed Regulations for Assessing the
Efficiency of Radio Frequency Spectrum Use. The rules are to be
observed by all telecommunications and radio broadcasting firms, whose
use of the radio frequency bands on which they are authorized to
operate will be subject to evaluation.

National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL) announces to
operators, equipment manufacturers, and the general public that it has
updated, on its official Internet portal, the List of Approved Makes
and Models of Equipment and Devices, in fulfillment of Article 8 of
Resolution N° 253, containing the List of Foreign Entities and
Organizations Recommended for Approval and Certification of
Telecommunications Equipment, published in Official Gazette No.
37,698, dated May 27, 2003.
