XII meeting of PCC.I will consider critical aspects on telecommunications

The XII meeting of the Permanent Consultative Committee I: Telecommunications (PCC.I) will be held in the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) headquarters in Washington DC, United States of America from March 12 to 14, 2008. Among the objectives of PCC.I we highlight the coordination of standards for telecommunication networks and services, with the aim of achieving the interoperability of such networks and services within the region and new policy, regulatory, and economic matters arising as a result of the rapid evolution of telecommunications.

XI meeting of PCC.II will analyze the implementation of the WRC-07 decisions

The XI meeting of the Permanent Consultative Committee II: Radiocomunications including Broadcasting will be held in the Organization of American States headquarters in Washington DC, United States of America from April 22 to 25, 2008. We highlight that among the aspects to be considered at the meeting are: implementation of the WRC-07 decisions, the establishment of the structure for the preparation of WRC-11, broadband powerline communications; use, operation and aplication of band C by the CITEL Administrations, implementation of Digital Television and monitoring the Effects of Electromagnetic Non-ionizing Emissions.

WRC-07 Decisions and Next Steps for Protecting the Satellite C-band

One of the most highly debated issues at WRC-07 was Agenda Item 1.4 which tasked ITU Members to identify additional radio-frequency spectrum for existing and future International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT).

Progress with Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) studies in Venezuela

Cooperation Agreement between CITEL and ICANN: settling grounds for fruitful interactions

During the course of 2007, ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and CITEL, the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission, completed the process of signing a Cooperation Agreement.  Although both organizations have a long history of cordial communications, this agreement settles ground for a more stable way to interact with each other, particularly in terms of information sharing and reciprocate participation in meetings.

Adoption of a costing model to calculate regulated prices in telecommunications

Historical costing models estimate costs for the network elements of a company’s operation on the basis of the company’s accounting and financial statements.  These costs generally consist of the compilation and review of the operators’ historical accounting data, depending on the rules provided to the industry by the country’s accounting authority.

Venezuela: Engineer Elda Rodriguez will become Head of CONATEL

On January 18, Elda Rodríguez Fernández was appointed Director of the National Telecommunication Commission (CONATEL) by the Office of the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as established in Decree No. 5,820, published in Gaceta Oficial No. 38,853. (CONATEL, 21 January 2008)

Brazil: ANATEL issues list of small municipalities to have 3G

On Friday, January 18, the National Telecommunication Agency (Anatel) determined the 2,740 Brazilian municipalities with populations of under 30,000 to be served by broadband wireless services.  The providers winning the bid for the frequency bands allocated to mobile telephony services, conducted from December 18 to 20, 2007, in Brasilia, must serve said municipalities for up to eight years from the publication of the licensing terms and conditions. Brazil: now has over 120 million cellular telephones

According to data of the National Telecommunication Agency (Anatel), in 2007, Brazil passed the 120 million mark for mobile telephony activations. Brazil’s 120,980,103 figure for cell phones recorded in December represents growth of 21.08% compared to 2006. (ANATEL, 17 January 2008)

With support from the Agency for Connectivity Program of the Ministry of Communications, different ministries and their related entities have presented online government sectoral action plans, outcomes of sectoral assessments prepared, which will contribute to the modernization of Colombia’s governmental administration. Venezuela: Socorro Hernández appointed new head of Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology

President Hugo Chávez has appointed Socorro Hernández, President of CANTV, as the new head of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology to replace Jesse Chacón, who will now become the head of the Office of the Presidency of the Republic. (CONATEL, 4 January 2008)
