IACHR Launches Process to Recruit Head of its Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights

Washington, D.C.- The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has launched a public recruitment process for the position of head of its Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (SRESCER). The person appointed to head this Rapporteurship will be in charge of supporting IACHR efforts to comply with its mandate to promote and protect rights in the areas on which this Special Rapporteurship focuses its work.

The procedure for the Commission to recruit the head of its SRESCER will follow all applicable regulations. Applications will be taken over the period February 17–April 17, 2023, based on the terms and conditions for recruitment processes posted on the IACHR employment website.

The names and background of shortlisted candidates will be posted on the IACHR website over the period June 1–30, 2023, so that civil society and Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) may make any observations they deem appropriate. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit a video with a maximum duration of 5 minutes, explaining what they hope to achieve if they are appointed head of the SRESCER. All videos will be posted on the IACHR website. The Commission hopes to complete this recruitment process by July 21, 2023, so the appointed individual may take the position on August 28, 2023.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
