Established in 1928, the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) was the first inter-governmental agency stablished to ensure recognition of human rights of women. CIM is made up of 34 Principal Delegates, one for each member state, and has become the principal forum for debating and formulating policy on women's rights in the Americas and gender equality.     In collaboration with the National Congress and the Ministry of Women of the Dominican Republic, CIM will bring together the 6 candidates that will compete for the presidency of the DR on May 20th 2012, for a substantive dialogue on the placement of women's rights and gender equality in their electoral platforms.

  • Advancing gender equality and decent work

    In the framework of the 17th Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labour, CIM launches a study on the advances and persistent challenges to advancing women's rights and gender equality in the world of work. The study will support an unprecedented inter-ministerial dialogue between the Ministers of Labour and the National Machineries for the Advancement of Women from OAS member states.

  • Nobel Peace Prize awarded to defenders of women's rights
    [October 7th 2011]
    The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Gbowee of Liberia, and to Tawakkul Karman of Yemen, "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work". CIM offers its heartfelt congratulations to these fearless defenders of women's rights and to the Nobel Prize committee.

  • A real application of women's right to live free of violence
