Introduction

The violence committed by minors and young adults has become one of the biggest challenges to public security in the Americas today.  It is therefore necessary to implement public policies that take into consideration the specific characteristics and needs of this part of the population. 

Against this background, the DPS has led investigations in order to understand and evaluate the extent of this problem.  These seek to foment model public policies, model legislation, prevention strategies, the identification of best practices at the regional level, systems of information and indicators, and strategies of rehabilitation and social reinsertion.

Second Special Meeting of The OAS Permanent Council on Criminal Gangs toward a Regional Strategy to Promote Inter-American Cooperation

The Permanent Council of the OAS convened the Second Special Meeting of the OAS Permanent Council on Criminal Gangs on March 2, 2010, during which Member States, organizations of the Inter-American system, international organizations and civil society, presented their vision and experiences to promote a Regional Strategy in dealing with Criminal Gangs.

MISPA Process

The Second Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas (MISPA II) took place on November 4-5, 2009 in the Dominican Republic.  In preparation of MISPA II, the Inter-American Specialized Conference on Public Security: Meeting of Experts was held in Montevideo, Uruguay on August 4-5, 2009.  The Commitment to Public Security in the Americas was adopted during MISPA I in October 2008.
