The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Program of Assistance for Control of Arms and Munitions (PACAM), verified each of the weapons and munitions handed in by the gang members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and of the Barrio 18, in El Salvador. This event took place this past March 9th, during a ceremony to commemorate the integration of the municipality of Apopa to the “Municipalities Free of Violence” initiative.

In this occasion, the gangs handed in 262 firearms, 90% of which were in functioning, 2 M-67 hang grenades, 5 household bombs, 68 chargers for different types of weapons and 225 cartridges of ammunition in different calibers. The surrender of these weapons coincides with the commemoration of one year since the truce between the gangs, initiated March 9, 2012.

The firearms and ammunition were relinquished to the authorities of El Salvador, according to the Transitory Decree No. 308, which states the Transitory Measures for the voluntary surrender of firearms, ammunition, explosives and similar artifacts.

This is the second occasion in which the gangs hand in their firearms, since July 2012, when the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, witnessed the first surrender of a little less than hundreds of weapons.
