CICAD meets with Anti-Drugs Authorities in Argentina and Peru

Ambassador Paul Simons, Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) went to Argentina and Peru in the past days, where he met with Rafael Bielsa and Carmen Masías, the heads of the anti-drugs office in each country (respectively), both of who took office recently.

“We have great expectations for these meetings in Argentina and Peru, where we wish to share CICAD’s main goals, including its new hemispheric strategy and action plan for 2011-2015. We also want to hear the plans that Argentina and Peru have, as two important countries in this process”, said Ambassador Simons, before the trip started.

Ambassador Simons visited Buenos Aires, Argentina on 30th- 31st January where he met with Bielsa, who was recently assigned the post of ‘SEDRONAR’ (Secretariat for the Prevention of Drug Addiction and Trafficking)


Rafael Bielsa, Chief of SEDRONAR

Dr. Bielsa, who was Foreign Secretary of the Government of Argentina under the Nestor Kirchner’s presidency, was appointed the head of SEDRONAR in late December, and will act as president of CICAD this year, as Argentina was elected to chair committee meetings for 2012.

According to the Argentine press, Bielsa has already initiated contact with Argentina’s Foreign Ministry to discuss lines of action for his country's presidency during the next regular session of CICAD, to be held at the of the OAS headquarters in Washington DC from 9th- 11th May 2012. Argentina was elected to serve as Chair of CICAD in 2011-2012, when Commission celebrates 25 years of service.


Carmen Masías, Chief of DEVIDA

Shortly after  February 2nd, Simons traveled to Lima, Peru where he met with the social psychologist, Carmen Masías, who was recently appointed as head of ‘DEVIDA’ (National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs), Peru's agency responsible for combating drug trafficking and promoting the control of illicit substances.
