The Therapeutic Community celebrates
25 years of Treatment for Addictions

Alexandra Hill, OAS specialist, at the 13th Latin-American Conference of Therapeutic Communities.

AT THE XIII CONFERENCE held in Medellin, Colombia, the Latin American Federation of Therapeutic Communities (FLACT) gathered to celebrate 25 years of humanitarian assistance, working directly with drug addicted individuals, assisting them in their recovery.

Reaffirming its commitment to staff training and professional therapy, and providing a certification mechanism for all members of the Federation, the OAS attended the XIII Conference of the Latin American Federation of Therapeutic Communities (FLACT). According to Alexandra Hill, specialist in the OAS Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), “The presence and support of civil society on issues of prevention and treatment is essential, and their involvement plays an important role in the services available for drug dependent persons.”

Gabriel Mejía Montoya, President of the FLACT, led the general coordination of the Conference in Medellin, and the Comunidad de los Terciarios Capuchinos, a catholic order, led the scientific coordination. For the Comunidad de los Terciarios Capuchinos, this event also marks the 30th anniversary of their service with the Therapeutic Community of Colombia (COTECOL). The conference was a tribute to Father Marco Fidel López and his followers, for their work with the Therapeutic Communities of Colombia. Over the past three decades, this community has made an invaluable contribution to the rehabilitation and reintegration process in Colombia and abroad.

Partnership and networking has allowed FLACT to stimulate the exchange of experiences, internships, and events; mobilizing, developing joint actions, and forming partnerships to encourage greater dialogue, and the development of researchers and experts in drug awareness.

The FLACT was created in Campinas, Brazil in 1987 as part of the first Latin American Conference of Therapeutic Communities. Today, practically every country in the area is represented by a national association or chapter. Every two years, the FLACT convenes in a region wide conference.
