OAS advises Mexico on Tourism Security
for Pan American Games
The Inter-American Committee Against Terrorism (CICTE) of the OAS Secretariat for Multidimensional Security (SMS) is advising Mexican authorities in the area of touristic security, for the upcoming XVI Pan American Games to be held in October in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco.
During September 28-29, a training workshop is scheduled to take place in Guadalajara titled: Workshop on Media Management for Major Events. This workshop is intended to provide guidance for the XVI Pan American Games, which, according to authorities in the city of Guadalajara, will feature 5,900 athletes and some 1.5 million spectators will attend.
The main objective of this Workshop, which will take place within the framework of IPO Americas, the regional initiative for the Americas of the International Permanent Observatory on Security of Major Events, is to provide follow-up to the workshops and simulation exercises in security for large events carried out in March 2011 in Guadalajara and Mexico City. These included the participation of national and local authorities involved in the organization of the XVI Pan American Games. This opportunity will focus on media management during and after Major Events. The workshop will also serve as a venue for sharing best practices and technical tools in the area of security of Major Events.
In addition, CICTE has provided workshops on touristic security to the city of Puerto Vallarta, aimed at establishing an Inter-American network of cities with tourist police. In this regard, two workshops on Coordination in Tourism Security in Puerto Vallarta last July and August, which were attended by representatives of public and private sectors.
All expenses related to course design, implementation and training materials have been funded by the Secretariat of CICTE.
