About the Department

The Department of Public Security (DPS) is part of the OAS Secretariat for Multidimensional Security and was created with the purpose of designing and implementing programs that support, within the framework of human rights, the efforts of the OAS Member States to address threats to public security.

Institutionalization of te Ministerial Meetings on Public Security

The 3rd Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas (MISPA III) adopted the Document of Port of Spain which decides on the institutionalization of the process of security ministerial meetings. MISPA process is the principal hemispheric forum for the exchange of information and experiences, and the consolidation and strengthening of cooperation in the areas of public safety. The MISPA IV will be held in Colombia, on the second semester of 2013.

Penitentiary and Prison Systems

Selection of official information on Penitentiary and Prison Policies as well as Lessons Learned that determine the response of the OAS Member States and their relevant penitentiary institutions in promoting prevention, law-enforcement, rehabilitation and social reinsertion as primary elements to support modernization of the prisons systems in the Americas.
