OAS and Honduras establish a Mission to Support the Security Reform in that country

ON MAY 18, 2012 the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Honduras, Arturo Corrales, in Washington and signed an agreement to establish the recently created Mission to Support Commission for Public Security Reform in Honduras. The OAS Mission will assist the work of the Commission in the designing, planning and certifying the process to reform the public security sector. The Honduran Foreign Minister showed optimism for this endeavor and stated that "once again the OAS will be there in situations where Honduras needs their help to solve problems that are beyond our capabilities."

The OAS Adopts an Action Plan

This plan will serve as a reference manual for the development of integral national programs and policies in Member States; it is oriented as a tool of the Declaration of San Salvador on Citizen Security in America.

THE OAS INTER-AMERICAN DRUG Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) met at its 51st Regular Session to analyze the results of current drug policies. Rafael Bielsa, the Argentinean President of CICAD, opened the meeting highlighting that the OAS has a mandate conferred recently by the heads of Government of the Hemisphere, at the Summit of the Americas, to analyze the current drug policies, and to explore options and scenarios for the development of new approaches.

Chile Offers to Host Headquarters of Center
for Control of Transnational Organized Crime

THE MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR and Public Security of Chile, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, who arrived in Washington, DC, to sign a cooperation agreement with the OAS met with Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, and officially declared his country's interest to host the headquarters of the entity that will coordinate the efforts, projects and regional programs in the fight against transnational organized crime, whose creation was agreed to in the recent Sixth Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia This was expressed in the context of the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between his country and the OAS General Secretariat, on May 18th. The Minister Hinzpeter also made public the decision of his government to cooperate with the OAS Mission to Support the Reform Commission of Public Security in Honduras
