OAS launches orchestra in correctional institution for minors
YOUTH IMPRISONED –some of which belonged to gangs- came together in the First Women’s Youth Orchestra of the Salvadorian Institute for Integral Development of Children and Adolescents. The Orchestra was formed in September 2012 as part of the OAS crime and violence prevention program. According to Edwin Garcia of the Batuta National Foundation of Colombia “In the orchestra, they take a break from the burden of being enemies, and I believe this relieves them.”
Mariano Vales, specialist of the OAS, explains that this project fits into the framework of the truce between gangs promoted by the Organization. “We hope the model of collaboration between gangs, government and civil society can be replicated in other detention centers, as well as outside of the penitentiary institutions.”
