“Faced with the threat posed by transnational organized crime, we will forge a coordinated international front, in which societies and governments not only confront this challenge, but also beat it”, affirmed the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, during the opening session of the first High Level Hemispheric Meeting against Transnational Organized Crime. The event was organized by the Government of Mexico and the Organization of American States (OAS) with the aim of coordinating regional actions against criminal groups whose activities constitute the principal threat against democratic institutions in the Hemisphere.
The OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, speaking to the authorities present – justice ministers, attorney generals and public prosecutors from 30 OAS Member States – called for the countries in the Hemisphere to “not be swayed by the magnitude of the labor required to combat the scourge caused by organized crime, nor be seduced by short-term, quick fix solutions, nor, above all, to ever give into to this enemy or reconcile ourselves to live alongside it”.
In his concluding words, Insulza announced his decision to create a Cooperation Center for Combating Transnational Organized Crime, which will operate from within the OAS General Secretariat.
The Symposium took place in the Mexican Ministry of External Relations in Mexico City on March 1-2, and enjoyed the participation, amongst others, of the Mexican Minister of External Relations, Patricia Espinoza, and the Mexican Attorney General, Marisela Morales. |
