Countries sign firearms marking agreement

In 2011, twelve countries in Latin America and the Caribbean signed agreements with the OAS to carry out projects to promote the marking of firearms. This agreement falls within the framework of the Inter-American Convention against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials (CIFTA).
The countries that have joined the initiative are:
Belize,
The Bahamas, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Uruguay, El Salvador, Guatemala, Barbados, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. |

The homicide rate in the Americas decreased during the 2000 – 2009 period, according to the 2011 Report on Citizen Security in the Americas (Alertamerica.org), presented by the OAS Secretariat for Multidimensional Security (SMS).

Foreign Minister Martinez Delivers Copy of the Declaration of San Salvador to G8

The Foreign Minister from El Salvador, Hugo Martínez, gave his peer from France, Alain Juppé, a copy of the Declaration of San Salvador on Citizen Security in the Americas, approved by the General Assembly of the OAS which took place last June in El Salvador.

New Inter-American Defense Board Authorities Sworn In

Lieutenant General Guy Thibault of the Canadian Forces entered office as the new Chairman of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), an entity of the OAS. The ceremony took place in Washington, DC, on June 30, 2011. Present at the ceremony, was OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza.
