
Cyber Attacks are Threats to
Prosperity in the Hemisphere
ACCORDING TO ADAM BLACKWELL, Secretary for Multidimensional Security of the OAS, "Cyber attacks can take many forms and produce serious consequences. Governments and States can be virtually paralyzed by the theft of confidential information and intellectual property." These issues were discussed during a workshop organized by the OAS, in Bogotá, which was attended by more than 40 countries from Americas and Europe, specialists from the FBI, NATO, the Civil Guard of Spain and the government of Colombia, Canada and Brazil.

OAS Supports Firearms
Destruction in Central America
THE OAS HAS INITIATED a program to assist the Central American governments in the destruction of firearms as part of its efforts to reduce armed violence in the sub region. The first phase of a project to eliminate over ten thousand small arms in Guatemala concluded on December 7, with the destruction of 1,008 weapons.

Drugs: We Are All Now In the Same Game
PAUL SIMONS, Executive Secretary of the OAS Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) signaled that the region still faces a “tough drugs problem” and noted that "the situation has changed a lot over the last 30 years: countries cannot be classified as producers and consumers any more. In fact, we are all now in the same situation, being producers and consumers at the same time.” Simons spoke, recently, to USA Direct, a TV program on CNN network.

Answering the Gap in Access to Justice
THE OAS, THROUGH its Inter-American Judicial Facilitators Program, contributes to the development of experiences that will enhance access to justice in our region. This Program exists in five countries of the region to support the organs of justice to establish a National Judicial Facilitators Service. With over 4,500 Judicial Facilitator volunteers - in Nicaragua, Ecuador, Panamá, Paraguay and Guatemala - one of every three people living in poverty has a door to justice.
