According to the OAS Observatory on Citizen Security, Brazil has reduced its annual deaths caused by firearms from 39,284 in 2003 to 34,300 in 2010, in part thanks to the disarmament campaigns carried out by the authorities of the most populated nation of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Insulza Condemns Monterrey Massacre Perpetrated by Organized Crime

The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, condemned the massacre carried out August 25th in Monterrey, Mexico, resulting in the deaths of 52 people, and he expressed his concern about this new instance of massive crime afflicting Mexican society. “Only political will, persistence and coordinated action between governments of the region can produce results in the frontal war against organized crime,” he said.

Military and Civilian Authorities Discuss Coordinated Response to Natural Catastrophes

The coordination of military and security forces in the region in national preparedness and response to complex emergencies and disasters was one of the focal points of debate in a meeting held this week in Costa Rica. Participants included specialists from the Department of Defense and Hemispheric Security of the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security of the OAS, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Defense and Security of the hemisphere.

OAS advises Mexico on Tourism Security
for Pan American Games

The Inter-American Committee Against Terrorism (CICTE) of the OAS Secretariat for Multidimensional Security (SMS) is advising Mexican authorities in the area of touristic security, particularly on the upcoming XVI Pan American Games being held in mid-October in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, where 5,900 athletes and about 1.5 million people will attend.
