OAS supports Seizure of Assets of Criminals

SECURITY EXPERTS from Europe and America met in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France, from 26-28 March, to prepare a multilateral response to the issue of criminal assets. "Today, in the Americas, we are promoting the identification, location and recovery of illicitly acquired assets. The seizure, in our view, discourages criminal activity while hitting the financial structure of criminal groups" said Adam Blackwell, Secretary for Multidimensional Security of the OAS, at the meeting.

First Regional Report on Drug Use

THE OAS RELEASED its 1st Report on Drug Use in the Americas, a comparative analysis of drug trends in OAS member States, covering the period of 2002-2009. In this occasion, Francisco Cumsille, from the OAS Observatory on Drugs, held that "cocaine use is widespread throughout Latin America and the Caribbean." Observatory’s data are used to measure trends on the supply and demand for drugs in the Hemisphere. According to Paul Simons, Executive Secretary of the OAS Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD): "Without scientific information, it is impossible to create good public policies to confront the problem successfully.”

Visit of Anticorruption Mechanism

BRAZIL, EL SALVADOR AND MEXICO were visited, recently, by a delegation of the OAS Anticorruption Mechanism (MESICIC). The results of these visits will contribute to a country report to be presented at the MESICIC next plenary meeting, in September 2012.
