Central America Advances Security Strategy

In the recent meeting of heads of government of the Central American Integration System countries considered the urgent issues to continue advancing the move towards a regional security strategy. During this meeting, Jose Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the Organization of American States, informed the heads of state about the progress of the study about the efficacy of distinct strategies in the fight against drug consumption. The OAS was given responsibility for this study by the countries during the latest Summit of the Americas

OAS Expands Support for the
Control of Arms in Guatemala

The OAS and the Government of Guatemala signed a Cooperation and Technical Assistance Agreement for the control and destruction of firearms, ammunitions, explosives and other related materials. The Agreement, signed on August 8, 2012 by Ambassador Adam Blackwell, Secretary of Multidimensional Security of the OAS and Rita Claverilli Sciolli, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, ratified the commitment of the Organization to the safeguarding of firearms, ammunitions, and explosives in Guatemala. The agreement extended the assistance coming from the OAS, since 2010, to include the needs of the government on Public Security issues. The activities provided for in the agreement are part of the OAS Security Assistance Mission in Central America Program (MAS-OAS)

Hemispheric Alliance Against
Transnational Organized Crime

There were advancements registered in the process of development of a hemispheric scheme against transnational organized crime, during the Third Technical Consultation Meeting held in Santiago, Chile on August 2 & 3, 2012. This meeting, inaugurated by the Minister of the Interior of Chile, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, and the two previous Technical Consultations have been convened to implement the mandate of the Heads of States and Governments of the Americas that participated in the VI Summit of the Americas.
