COMPONENTS

The Project Components are:

• Development of the legislative basis and the institutional framework for the land rights of the indigenous peoples and Maroons of Suriname.

• Promotion and integration of traditional medicine, and improvement of health care in the Trio and Wayana communities of Suriname.

• Well-established direct communication channels to meet conservation and development challenges.

• Well-designed monitoring and protection plans in indigenous areas in place.

• Conservation-oriented incomes for park guards and local inhabitants established.

• Capacity building of indigenous and other local partners to better protect the forests and to help them attract other funding in the medium and long-term.

• Updated maps of protected areas and indigenous communities.

• Local Institutions trained in specific skills for land management and land-use monitoring.

• An increased level of participation of the indigenous population in regional/national conservation strategies.

• Indigenous peoples and relevant agencies, trained in the protection of the forest from threats originating outside the reserve.

• Development of conservation activities that relate with the carbon credit market.

• Proposal for submission to GEF to develop a strategy and activities for the conservation of biodiversity in the region prepared.

Time Frame and Budget: A three year project starting in January 2004, with US$198,391 approved for 2004. 
No-cost extension for 2004 funds received until June 2005.
