 Main Water Issues

Surface water is the main source of water used in Grenada, although wells, springs, and desalinization plants also exist and can be further exploited if demand rises.  According to UNEP, one of the main water issues in Grenada is water loss in the distribution system (most prominently through leakage): in fact, almost half (45-50%) of all water production is lost in this manner.  (Peters, 1999)  The UNEP recommends a number of conservation-based legislations and policies, such as tax related incentives for conservation and the implementation of more comprehensive leak detection programmes.  Other problems include the salinization of water resources.
