Ecuador
Main Water Issues
According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the water supply situation in Ecuador presents very serious problems. Although the state possesses abundant natural resources, the distribution of both water supply and population are very uneven, with 97% of the population country living in regions that together contain only 20% of the total water supply. Furthermore, the country suffers from both desertification in the south and soil erosion and deforestation in the highland areas; these growing problems, coupled with increasing population, could compound Ecuador’s water supply situation in the future. Much of the nation’s groundwater resources remain unexploited and could be used to mitigate this supply shortage. Legal and institutional issues in Ecuador include the division of water resource management responsibilities across several different agencies and a debate about the role of the private sector in water resource management.
