Energy Conservation and the “Greening” of OAS Buildings

The OAS is committed to becoming more environmentally friendly within its internal operations.  In the coming months, a number of environmental initiates aimed at greening OAS operations in such diverse areas as energy efficiency, recycling, and reducing the carbon footprint of its operations will be introduced.  In August, 2007, the Secretariat of Finance and Administration announced new measures to improve the energy efficiency of OAS buildings.  Also in August 2007, the Department of Sustainable Development committed all its travel, either of staff members and consultants, or participants at meetings supported by the Department, to carbon offsets.  In August, the first meeting of national focal points of water managers from the 34 member countries included a carbon offset action, with approximately 36 tons of carbon equivalent offset through a reforestation project in Chiapis, Mexico.
