(2010- 2011)  Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative

WHMSI – OAS – FEMCIDI III

Funded by FEMCIDI, the goal of the 2010- 2011 Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative (WHMSI) training program  is to build upon existing WHMSI and other migratory species efforts to significantly enhance the conservation of shared migratory species throughout the Americas by strengthening institutional and human capacity, political commitment, international cooperation, and public-private partnerships at regional, national and local levels. For this purpose the GS/OAS is working in partnership with five NGOs and Government Agencies to develop different regional capacity building activities.

Coordinated by

Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds (SCSCB)

Project Summary:

The SCSCB is proposing the project “Monitoring Waterbirds in Caribbean Protected Areas for Adaptive Management and Public Education” to take place in the insular Caribbean plus Trinidad and Tobago.

SCSCB’s Caribbean monitoring partnership will implement this project, which will promote waterbird monitoring as a means to improve conservation and management of biodiversity (especially migratory birds) and engage citizens in monitoring, thereby increasing awareness. The SCSCB will hold a workshop to promote aquatic bird monitoring in protected areas and buffer zones and their application to adaptive management and environmental education. Based on discussion at the workshop, SCSCB will develop a strategy to increase capacity for bird and habitat monitoring using citizen scientists.

Target audiences will include protected area managers, educators, field biologists, volunteers, funding agencies and international organizations. Products will include second editions of Caribbean Birdwatch training manuals, including development of programmes for monitoring landbirds and supporting activities (such as fund raising, public education and the use of volunteers) to supplement existing materials. A strategy for a Caribbean approach to applying citizen science to bird monitoring will be developed. Efforts will be made to promote distance learning techniques and on-line access to materials using the latest technology.
