Migrants in Disaster Situations

On January 27, 2009, the Department of Sustainable Development of the Secretary for Integral Development (SEDI), through its Natural Disasters Management Division, participated in the panel of the event “Migration and Disasters Situations”, organized by the Committee on Migration Issues of the OAS Permanent Council. Based on the DSD experience on natural disasters risk reduction, the migratory effect and its negative impact in the environment was addressed as a consequence of natural disasters, whereas investment in natural disasters mitigation and risk reduction was presented as a way of reducing such negative effect in the long term. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Pan-American Development Foundation (PADF), were also represented in the panel.
