Agreement    Proposal

Thematic Network:

Invasive Species

Country:

Venezuela

1.      Summary:

Venezuela has an strategical geographical position in northern South America, which in turn made us a port of entry for food and other commodities for our population and that of neighboring countries, but this fact has also played a determinant role in the introduction of an array of organisms that in greater or lesser extent have spread through our country usually affecting negatively both the local biodiversity and the available food resources. By digitalizing and systematizing the available data on exotic invasive species found in Venezuela, we will offer to government agencies, research institutions, universities, and the general public access to up to date information on the status of these organisms and their impact in Venezuela. This information is not only of great value to Venezuela, it will allow neighboring countries to lookout for new invasions to the region. At the end of this project we will have a data base of the invasive species of Venezuela with pictures and distribution maps, all served through a web page linked to IABIN main page.
