This
Project involves information related to the Ichthyological Collection
deposited at the Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad Nacional
Mayor de San Marcos, at Lima, Perú. The MUSM collection was created in
1982 and is representative of the national ichthyofauna, mainly from
freshwater systems of the country which is continuously increasing its
diversity. The fish specimens included in the MUSM collection includes
material coming from the coastal rivers, Andean high land waters, but
the great amount of lots are from the Amazon River Basin samples. The
principal objective of this proposal is to provide a taxonomic database
which can be interoperable with other networking systems around the
world such as Darwincore or similar. This database will contain geo
referred taxonomic information and other data required by IABIN program
about the Amazon Peruvian fish species. It is expected to input into the
database around of 18000 records delivered every two months at 3000
data, each time. The Amazon fishes are highly diverse, we have
recognized 995 valid species (60 families), expecting around of 1200
total species. Several of these species are very important as protein
source for the riverside populations, while some others are endemic of
Peru. At the moment, over fishing is being observed in the surroundings
of the most important Amazonian cities. In the other hand, now is
possible to obtain values for the Integrity Biological Index (IBI) to
get direct estimation of the state of conservation of the aquatic
habitats from the fish communities. |
