Summary |
The coast of the
Gulf of Mexico is the place of breeding and residence of a great variety of
marine and aquatic birds. Along its coast are found several breeding
colonies of these birds, which are in constant risk of disappearing mainly
because anthropogenic pressure. From 2005 to 2007 PRONATURA A.C. Veracruz
implemented a monitoring project to identify and asses the size and state of
this colonies, from the north part of the state of Veracruz to the south of
Campeche. In every colony or probably breeding site, a count of all
individuals per species was effectuated, obtaining more than 18000
geopositioned observations. However, this data in not available to the
public in general. This proposal is focused in the integration of such
information and the data already generated using the IABIN format as a base.
Pronatura Veracruz is part of the NatureServe network that has as an
objective to share information and points of view in the management of
biological data, and also the development of potential distribution indexes.
In the pasts meetings of this network, it has been discussed the need of
having standardized formats for the use of biological and environmental
information, and the IABIN initiative has the possibility of achieve this
goals. The data offered as base of this proposal was obtained thanks to a
grant provided by Pronatura Noroeste. |
