         Summary

This proposal is presented by the Colombian Museum of Natural Marine History(MHNMC) of the Coastal and Marine Research Institute INVEMAR. INVEMAR is an institution jointed to the Colombian Environmental Ministry and it is in charge of developing marine and coastal research in the Colombian territorial sea waters. The project intents to organize into a digital database at least 10,000 geo-referenced records of marine fauna, collected since 1963, most of which are identified to species level and include biological material held in the MHNMC and observational data. The digitization will be made into the SIBM Information Systems already designed by INVEMAR. The project also intents to implement tools to improve our Information Systems allowing free access to the information through INTERNET. The digitized information will be very useful to users at the national and international levels such as the Ministry of Environment, research institutions, universities, nongovernmental organizations, regional environmental corporations, etc. The project will also make a significant contribution to global biodiversity initiatives such as the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
