Summary: |
The "Irina Delanova Gemtchüjnicov" Herbarium (BOTU), UNESP - São Paulo
State University, at Botucatu County, (São Paulo, Brazil), is located at
a transition region between two Brazilian Biomes, the Atlantic Forest
and the "Cerrado", which are among the 25 world "Hot
Spots"
due to their high diversity and presence of endangered species. The
irregular relief of the area, named "Cuesta Basáltica", has provided
protection to fragmented remains of the original vegetation and the
associated fauna. As a consequence and because of its geographic
location, these fragments are pointed out as a priority for
conservation/restoration measures and to improve the connection with
other vegetation remains at São Paulo State. However, the local flora is
poorly known due to the fact that the few available inventories do not
refer to all life forms or were not published yet. So, the access to
this information is very difficult at present. Aiming to heal this gap,
this project is proposed and has the purpose to type scientific data
from BOTU Herbarium and keep them on-line through IABIN. About 18,000
data from herbarium specimens will be typed in one year work. The
project will be executed by teachers, university employees, volunteer
trainees and a professional specifically contracted by means of this
project. |
