Thematic Network:

Invasive Species

Country:

Bolivia

1.      Summary:

The invasive species are considered to be the second cause of biodiversity loss and threat to the agriculture and public health. Unfortunately, they have not been considered as a serious problem in Bolivia, even though their management and control as well as the struggle against them has generated coordinated efforts in several countries and institutions at the international level.  Nevertheless this vision is changing, and the importance of generating plans and strategies at national level to face the serious problem that the invasive species represent has been recognized.  Thus, the National Government, through the Vice ministry of Biodiversity, Forest Resources, and Environment (VBRFMA, by its Spanish acronym) and IABIN's focal point in Bolivia,  is generating the national strategy concerning the detection, prevention, management, and control of invasive species.  Therefore, it is extremely important to develop a database that compiles and generates more information related to this subject, as well as, and in a parallel way, to generate the node of national information that participate in an active way in the IABIN Invasive Species Information Network (I3N), to address the problems concerning invasive species jointly and applying common strategies in the Western Hemisphere and thus, to prevent future invasions and damages caused to the ecosystems and national economies.
