1. Summary: |
The first systematic survey of the
vertebrates of about 1.1 million hectares of Nahuel Huapi, Lanin
and Laguna Blanca National Parks of Argentina
was developed under the project “Plan Inventario” (Inventory Plan)
during the years 1980- 1984. Including additional records obtained in
the periphery of these Parks and in later years, some 26.000 records of
about 297 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals were
obtained, consisting of both field observations and specimens with their
corresponding localities. Though the 1984 preliminary project reports
summarized information on species richness, distribution and
abundance, the primary records were never
geo-referenced nor digitalized and incorporated into a data base, so
they are not available to those who work in the conservation of the
biodiversity of these protected areas, nor to the scientific community
in general, since they are not available on Internet. This information
is of fundamental scientific and management value for these protected
areas not only on account of the quantity of observations and collected
specimens, but due to the historic and comparative value that they have
acquired after almost 25 years since they were obtained. Once the
project is concluded the new information will represent a 20% increase
in the present volume of data available through the Biological
Information System of Argentina. |
