OAS/DSD wins the 2008 Global Development Marketplace Grant

The Department of Sustainable Development of the Organization of American States in partnership with the Paraguayan Environmental Law and Economics Institute (IDEA) received the crystal award in the 2008 Global Development Marketplace: Sustainable Agriculture for Development.

‘The Development Marketplace is a competitive grant program that identifies and funds innovative, early stage development projects with high potential for development impact and replication.’

The 100 finalists participating in this year’s competition were chosen from 1,800 applications. A jury comprised of development professionals and other experts selected 22 projects to receive the award. The project submitted by OAS/DSD and IDEA, “Payment for Ecosystem Services and Sustainable Agriculture,” was one of the 22 winners who will receive grants of up to US$200,000.

The objective of the project is to improve the socio-economic well being of 500 households and protect and improve the ecosystem service capacity by implementing a menu of agro-forestry practices combined with a scheme of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). The project will target three pilot sites located in the Department of San Pedro, which includes a portion of the Bosque Atlántico del Alto Parana (BAAP) along with other sensitive ecosystems. l video l video
