Landmark Geothermal Concession and Power Purchase Agreement in
Nevis
Historic
developments advancing the exploitation and use of renewable
geothermal resources for electricity generation are taking place
on the small island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. On April
28, the Nevis Island Administration issued a geothermal resource
concession in favor of West Indies Power, allowing the company
to develop and produce electricity using geothermal resources. A
25-year power purchase agreement was also signed by West Indies
Power and the Nevis Electricity utility NEVLEC for the supply of
10MW of electrical power. The Department of Sustainable
Development of the Organization of American States helped broker
these agreements, which expand the role of renewable energy in
Saint Kitts and Nevis.
