Over the past year, the
DSD has focused on assisting Caribbean States in anticipating and/or
mitigating real or potential threats to their social, economic and
environmental security such as: natural hazards; energy price shocks: food
scarcity, land degradation, chemical contamination, loss of biodiversity and
water scarcity. These efforts are described below.
During
the first half of 2006, the Department provided technical support to the
Joint Consultative Organ (JCO) of the Committee on Hemispheric Security and
the Permanent Executive Committee of the Inter-American Council for Integral
Development on Natural Disaster Reduction and Risk Management. The
Department has begun the following initiatives:
