The Department of International Law is in charge of the
promotion and development of international law and of
advising OAS member states, political areas, and operational
units on international legal matters.
The core functions of the Office include the following:

Acting as the legal advisory organ to the political bodies
of the OAS on matters of international law.
▪
Providing assistance to member states in the completion of
treaty formalities and in the implementation of
Inter-American treaties and other instruments.
▪
Providing assistance to member states in the development of
local legal frameworks to ensure compliance with its
international legal obligations.
▪
Providing and coordinating legal opinions on international
law matters to organs, organisms, [conferences] and entities of the OAS.
▪
Preparing legal opinions, analytical papers, background
studies, and drafts of international conventions, [treaties] and other instruments on
[public] and
[private
international law].
▪
Providing technical, substantive, and secretariat support to
member states on commercial and civil issues.
▪
[Developing, promoting and
implementing the teaching, study and advancement of
international law].
▪
Collecting and disseminating information, studies and papers
throughout [publications] and
other pertinent means.
▪
Acting as Secretariat to the [Inter-American Juridical Committee].
▪
Acting as depository for [treaties]
and other international [agreements].
▪
Acting as depository of [bilateral
agreements] celebrated between the OAS and member states
or other international organizations and entities.
▪
Develop and maintain the current web site to disseminate
information on treaties and the Office’s activities and
programs. |
