Summits of the Americas Secretariat
1. Activities Assigned
The Program assigns the following two specific activities to
the Summits Secretariat:
• Assist the CAJP and participate
in the follow-up and coordination process of this Program,
and submit the results obtained to the Summits process.
(Note: This activity will be performed pursuant to paragraph
three of Section VI of the Program on follow-up activities.)
• Administer, under the
supervision of the CAJP, the specific voluntary fund to be
established for the execution of the Program activities
assigned to the organs, agencies, and entities of the OAS.
2. Activities Carried Out/Planned
• Assist the Committee on
Juridical and Political Affairs in the implementation of the
actions agreed to in the Work Plan of the Inter-American
Program for the Promotion and Protection of the Human Rights
of Migrants, Including Migrant Workers and Their Families
regarding follow-up and compliance with the mandates of the
Heads of State and Government within the framework of the
Summits Process, especially the Fourth Summit of the
Americas.
• The Summits of the Americas
Secretariat will coordinate with the Government of Trinidad
and Tobago, President of the Summits Process and host of the
Fifth Summit of the Americas to be held in 2009, the
activities that will be carried out in the framework of
regular meetings and ministerial meetings of the SIRG.
Follow up reports to the mandates and work to be undertaken
will be presented during these meetings, especially the
preparatory meeting for the thirty-seventh regular session
of the OAS General Assembly.
• In compliance with the decision
of the member institutions of the Joint Summit Working Group
(JSWG) on November 29, 2006, the Summits Secretariat has
scheduled a coordination meeting in February 2007 with the
President of the Fifth Summit. That meeting will discuss
work to be done in support of member states, as well as the
presentation of the oral report on implementation in March
2007 and the written report to the Ministers of Foreign
Affairs in June. On that same date, a publication will be
prepared on hemispheric challenges, which will deal with the
human rights of migrants, migrant workers, and their
families.
• Disseminate to civil society
organizations the decisions of the Committee on Juridical
and Political Affairs of the Permanent Council and promote
and coordinate their participation in the political organs
of the OAS.
• Assist the Committee on
Juridical and Political Affairs in the deliberations on the
creation of a specific fund for voluntary contributions with
a view to carrying out activities of the Program assigned to
the organs, agencies, and entities of the OAS. The Summits
of the Americas Secretariat will also administer this fund
under the supervision of the CAJP.
3. Calendar

Meeting of the Joint Working Group on implementation on the
Summits mandates
March 2007 Preparation of report on regional challenges –
contribution on the situation of migrant workers
Preparation of implementation report on the mandates of the
Fourth Summit of the Americas – technical assistance to the
Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs
May 2007 Dissemination to civil society organizations of the
decisions of the Committee on Juridical and Political
Affairs of the Permanent Council and promotion of their
participation in the political organs of the OAS.
June 2007 Presentation of the written report to the
Ministers of Foreign Affairs on implementation of the
mandates of the Fourth Summit of the Americas
