Department of International Law
1. Activities Assigned
The Program assigns the Department of International Law of the
Secretariat for Legal Affairs (SLA) the task of
compiling and disseminating on its website current national
migration legislation, policies, and requirements.
2. Activities Carried Out
• Every year, the Department of International Law helps the Committee on Juridical and
Political Affairs organize a special meeting on the
Inter-American Program and to prepare a report on it.
• As promised in its presentation
at the first special meeting, held on March 16, 2006, the
Office designed an Internet page on the Inter-American
Program, which has been available to the public since
September, 2006.
• The Office also incorporated
into this web page, a section on migration laws of member
states, which now contains update information on legislation
in all the countries of Latin America.
• The Department of International Law
has added to the Course on International Law 2006 the topic
of migrant workers, and it plans to continue including the
topic in the future. Likewise, the Office will incorporate
in a permanent fashion this topic in the Workshops on
International Law that are organized annually, starting on
2007.
3. Activities Being Planned
• Over the year to come, the
Office will include Caribbean countries in its compilation
of legislation in the web page.
• During that year, the Office
will make a compendium of current national migration
policies and requirements in the different countries.
• Every year, the Office will
help the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs plan
its activities in relation to the Inter-American Program.
4. Calendar
• August 2006 – March 2007: Help
the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs organize a
special meeting on the Inter-American Program and to prepare
a report on that meeting.
• August 2006 – March 2007: Help
the Office of the Secretary General prepare the Program Work
Plan.
• March 2007: Design and launch
the Inter-American Program Internet page.
• February 2007: Compilation of
migration legislation in the countries of Latin America.
• January to December, 2007:
Incorporate the Caribbean countries in its compilation of
legislation on the Internet.
• January to December, 2007:
Compilation of current national migration policies and
requirements.
• Each year: Help the Committee
on Juridical and Political Affairs plan its activities in
relation to the Inter-American Program.
• Each year: Assist with the
updating of the Inter-American Program.
