Special Sessions
The Inter-American Program, as one of its prime
follow-up activities, requires the Permanent Council to
consider convening an Annual Special Session of the
Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs to provide a
mechanism for evaluating and improving the operation of the
Program.
The purpose of these Special Sessions is to allow required
actors under the Program to present the contributions they
have made in fulfillment thereof, on an annual basis, and to
allow the Member States to evaluate these implementation
activities. Equally important, the Special Sessions, which
are attended by all the OAS entities, Member States, other
international organizations, academics, experts and members
of civil society, are designed to provide for an exchange of
best practices, information, and new proposals for inclusion
into the Program.
The Inter-American Program was approved in June 2005. As a
result, the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs has
held two annual sessions: one held in March 2006 for the
2005/2006 work year, and the second in February 2007 for the
2006/2007 work year. There was also an initial Special
Session of the Working Group in September 2004 to receive
the input from OAS entities, Member States, members of civil
society and other experts on the draft Inter-American
Program. Links to the documents for each special session are
contained above.
