The International Committee of the Red
Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent
organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to
protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal
violence and to provide them with assistance. It directs and
coordinates the international relief activities conducted by
the Movement in situations of conflict. It also endeavors to
prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening
humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.
Established in 1863, the ICRC is at the origin of the
International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Committee on Juridical and Political
Affairs of the Permanent Council
The Committee on Political and Juridical
Affairs of the Organization of American States is a
specialized committee of the Permanent Council. The
Permanent Council, one of the organs by means of which the
Organization accomplishes its purposes, is under the direct
authority of the General Assembly. The Council comprises one
representative for each Member State, who is especially
appointed by the respective government with the rank of
ambassador. Chapter XII of the Charter stipulates the
functions and responsibilities of the Permanent Council. It
takes up any matter entrusted to it by the General Assembly
or the Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign
Affairs. The Council sees to the maintenance of friendly
relations among the member States and assists them in the
peaceful settlement of their disputes. It also acts as
Preparatory Committee of the General Assembly unless the
latter decides otherwise.
The current President of the Committee
on Juridical and Political Affairs is Ambassador Claude
Heller of Mexico.

Department of Legal
Cooperation and Information
The Department of Legal Cooperation and
Information of the General Secretariat is responsible for
working with the Member States in the development of legal
cooperation projects. The Department is charged with, among
other things, the coordination and organization of meetings
aimed at developing specific technical aspects concerning
legal and judicial cooperation. The Department is also
responsible for developing programs and projects of
technical cooperation on the different aspects of legal
activity as they pertain to the Inter-American System.
