Activities undertaken
Participation by the Department of International law in the Seventh Master’s Degree Program in International Protection of Human Rights
(Spain, 2010)
For the second consecutive year, the Department of International Law participated in the prestigious Master’s Degree Program in International Protection of Human Rights, organized by the University of Alcalá, Spain. The lectures were delivered from November 8 to 12, 2010, at the old and distinguished Spanish university.
This year, the Department gave five lectures in connection with a course entitled “Human Rights and Vulnerable Groups: Political Processes within the framework of the Organization of American States.” One of the issues addressed in that course was “International Standards of Protection of Afro-Descendants in the Inter-American System.”
The Master’s program was designed to train government officials, attorneys, and other professionals in human rights issues, with a particular focus on international legal practice. Among those taking part in the course were several Latin American students, as well as some Europeans and students from other parts of the world. Many were government officials in their respective countries, pertaining to institutions such as the Ombudsman’s Office or other human-rights-related entities, while others belonged to NGOs working in this field.
Through its participation, the Department of International Law sought to raise awareness of an issue it regards as highly important, namely the protection of Afro-Descendants’ rights, in the context of an event capable of generating a multiplier effect.
