Family Law
In
the process of implementing the Network of
Hemispheric Legal Cooperation in the Area of Family
and Child Law, the Department of International Law
organized the first meeting of the pilot group of
English-speaking countries. It was held with the
support and recommendation of the Eighth Meeting of
Ministers of Justice or Other Ministers or Attorneys
General of the Americas (REMJA VIII).
The pilot meeting in English took place on May 4 and
5 at OAS headquarters. Participants were officials
designed by the Ministry of Justice in Brazil, the
Federal Administrative Central Authority of the
Office of the President of Brazil, the U.S.
Department of State, the Ministry of Justice of
Quebec-Canada, the Department of Justice of Canada,
the Department of Justice of Saskatchewan-Canada,
the Office of the Attorney General of the Bahamas,
the Crown Counsel of Grenada, and the Secretariat
for Foreign Affairs of Mexico. The meeting prepared
a document with recommendations on guidelines to
supplement the work and the tools prepared by the
pilot group in Spanish.
Thanks to the work of the pilot, REMJA VIII invited
member states to join this network for cooperation
in child and family law. It also requested that the
results of the pilot meetings be presented at a
technical meeting to be held in the second half of
this year, coordinated by Brazil, with technical
support from the Department of International Law.
The network is available at the department’s web
site:
