The Department of International Law is helping to
organize the Fourth Course on International
Humanitarian Law (IHL), which will be held within
the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs.
This event will also receive the technical and
financial collaboration of the International
Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with which the
Department of International Law has a cooperation
agreement. The course will take place on Thursday
28 January 2010 in the Padilha Vidal Room at the
headquarters of the OAS General Secretariat, in
Washington, D.C., and is being offered in fulfillment
of resolution
AG/RES. 2507 (XXXIX-O/09).
The course is open to staff of the Permanent Missions
of the OAS member states, General Secretariat
personnel, and other interested parties. The classes
will be given by ICRC specialists and experts in
International Humanitarian Law from Sweden, Mexico,
and Peru, among others.
The protection and promotion of International
Humanitarian Law in the Americas is a subject of
great importance within the OAS. For over fifteen
consecutive years the General Assembly has adopted
resolutions containing recommendations and mandates
to the States on the subject. Moreover, the Committee
on Juridical and Political Affairs holds a special
session annually to discuss the state of protection
of international humanitarian law in the hemisphere.
Those interested in participating in this course are
kindly asked to check the
website of the Department of International Law
for the purposes of registration.
