Newsletter - January 2010
Editorial
Welcome
to the first issue of the newsletter of the
Department of International Law of the Organization
of American States (OAS). We want to begin the year
by launching this new initiative, given the great
interest shown both within and outside the
Organization regarding the recent work of our
Department. We intend the newsletter to serve as a
tool for disseminating both recent activities and
those to take place in the near future, and it will
be distributed on a quarterly basis.
Beginning last year, our Department added to its
traditional line of activities (providing legal
counsel to the various organs and bodies of the
Organization and promoting international law – both
public and private-), the execution of various
projects to strengthen civil society in response to
specific needs.
In this issue you will find information on our work
in such diverse areas as access to public
information, indigenous peoples, access to justice,
family law, people of African descent, International
Criminal Court, international humanitarian law,
refugees, as well as activities that have become
traditional for us: the Course on International Law
and the Workshops on International Law.
We trust that this newsletter will help us strengthen
even further our relations with each of you and that
each of you will help us, with your suggestions, to
convert this newsletter into another means to
disseminate international law and the Inter-American
System.
On behalf of all of us in the Department, we wish you
a happy 2010 and hope that you enjoy our publication.
Dante M. Negro
Director
