Course on International Law

XXXVII Course on International Law The thirty-seventh annual Course on International Law was held in Rio of Janeiro, Brazil, from August 2-20, 2010. The course was organized by the Department of International Law, under the Secretariat for Legal Affairs, in conjunction with the Inter-American Juridical Committee.

The course concerns one of the most emblematic and long-standing activities of the OAS in terms of promoting and disseminating international law, which according to the OAS Charter, “is the standard of conduct of States in their reciprocal relations.” Consequently, this is a very important initiative and has been instrumental component in the education of young people from throughout the Americas, many of whom go on to occupy high-level positions in their respective governments as well as in the OAS.

The theme of this thirty-seventh course was “International Law and Contemporary Global Transformations.” Accordingly, the course included current issues of international law, particularly in the context of the Inter-American system. A select group of professors from different countries of the Americas and Europe were invited to participate in the course.

The student body of the course included scholarship recipients from different countries of the region, which resulted in productive exchanges and further strengthened the bonds of friendship and camaraderie among citizens of the various countries of the Americas represented in the course. In addition to the scholarships awarded by the OAS, the Department awarded four additional scholarships to students of African descent from different countries, which further enhanced the group’s cultural diversity.

The DIL is working to compile a report of instructor presentations given throughout the course, with a view to making this available to a wider audience.
