Afro-descendants
On September 13-17, 2010, the
workshop entitled
“Increasing the Participation and Advocacy of
Afro-Descendants at the Organization of American
States and the Summit of the Americas Process,”
was held at OAS headquarters.
This workshop was organized by
Global Rights Partners for Justice, a civil society
organization registered with the OAS, and received
collaboration and support from the OAS General
Secretariat.
Within the framework of this
event, the Department delivered a presentation on
the Draft Inter-American Convention against Racism
and All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance. The
purpose of this presentation was to provide
information on the current status of negotiations to
representatives of organizations of people of
African descent attending the workshop, as well as
on some of the challenges currently facing this
draft convention. In addition, the presentation was
meant to encourage more active participation on the
part of the representatives of afro-descendant
organizations in the convention process.
Since the formation of the
Working Group to Prepare a Draft Inter-American
Convention against Racism and All forms of
Discrimination and Intolerance in 2005, the DIL has
provided legal advisory services to the Group and
actively contributed to disseminating information on
this subject. Moreover, in 2009, the Department
launched its “Program for the Incorporation of the
Afro-descendent Theme in the Policies and Programs
of the OAS.” The program is currently being
implemented and has met with much success. In
addition, we have reported on the program’s
activities in previous issues of this newsletter.
