SOLIDARITY WITH AND ASSISTANCE FOR
THE PEOPLE AND GOVERNMENT OF EL SALVADOR
(Adopted at the meeting of November 11,
2009)
The Permanent Council of the
Organization of American States,
DEEPLY CONCERNED at the emergency
situation in the sister Republic of El Salvador as a result of the rains
caused by Hurricane Ida that have led to floods and mudslides which have
cost lives and destroyed harvests, homes, basic services, and part of
the road infrastructure;
TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION that the
President of the Republic, Mr. Carlos Mauricio Funes Cartagena, has
declared a state of emergency and that at this moment it is a national
priority to rescue survivors and victims, as well as to provide shelter,
food, and health services to the population affected;
CONVINCED that natural disasters are
highly detrimental and an obstacle to the development of the country hit
by them; and
CONVINCED ALSO that the international
community is called upon to show solidarity and to lend ongoing support
to the country affected, especially in order to enable it to overcome
the emergency and to continue with its economic and social development
plans;
RESOLVES:
1.
To express its condolences to and utmost solidarity with the
People and Government of El Salvador following the loss of human lives
and the destruction caused by torrential rains last weekend.
2.
To request the Secretary General to start making the immediate
arrangements needed with the international agencies and competent
bodies, including the Inter-American Committee on Natural Disaster
Reduction (IACNDR), in order to extend technical and financial support
for the work begun by the Government of El Salvador to deal with the
emergency in its country.
3.
To call upon the international community to continue to provide
support, in close coordination with the Government of El Salvador, to
that country in order to contribute to the solution of the current
situation, including national reconstruction and normalization efforts.
