NAMING OAS MEETING ROOMS AFTER DISTINGUISHED
NATIONALS OF CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY MEMBER STATES

(Adopted at its session held on August 29, 2008)


THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,

CONSIDERING that the architecture of the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) reflects varied influences of its member states, and that its meeting rooms have been named in honor of various distinguished personalities who have contributed to the advancement of hemispheric causes;

UNDERSCORING the desire of the countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to be included among these symbols that are representative of the history and heritage of the Americas;

RECALLING:

The exploits of Toussaint Louverture, the Precursor of Haiti’s independence, illustrious strategist, eminent visionary, outstanding combatant for liberty and equality; his impressive contribution to the abolition of slavery and decolonization; his exceptional influence on the international order of his time, based on the respect of human dignity and the principle of self determination of people, which impacted the destiny of many nations, and in particular of the Americas;

The life, works and legacy of the Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jamaica’s first National Hero, politician, trade unionist, journalist, publisher, playwright, poet, philosopher, entrepreneur and father of black nationalism who inspired peoples the world over through his profound message of freedom, self-determination and racial pride and his unswerving commitment to social justice, equality and human rights; and

The exemplary life and distinguished career of Sir Arthur Lewis, Saint Lucian economist and intellectual; his valuable contribution as Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and first President of the Caribbean Development Bank, Nobel Prize winner in Economics and the Caribbean’s First Nobel Laureate, distinguished author, diplomat and activist for Caribbean federation and regional development,


RESOLVES:

1. To name the delegates lounge located on the Ground Floor of the OAS Main Building after Toussaint Louverture, in honor of the distinguished Caribbean Statesman and Hero.

2. To name the Hall of Culture located between the Azteca Patio and the Simon Bolivar Room, on the ground floor of the OAS Main Building after Marcus Garvey, in honor of the distinguished Caribbean Politician and Hero.

3. To name meeting room number TL-76 located on the Terrace Level of the OAS General Secretariat Building after Sir Arthur Lewis, in honor of the distinguished Caribbean Economist and Nobel Laureate.
