COMMEMORATION OF THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF
THE VOICE OF THE OAS (Radio Service)
(Adopted at the meeting held on January 15, 2008)
THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,
CONSIDERING:
That the international broadcast service the Voice of the OAS, pursuant
to General Assembly and Permanent Council resolutions and under the
agreement signed between the General Secretariat of the Organization of
American States and the Department of States of the United States of
America on July 3, 1957, has rendered 50 years of uninterrupted work in
the service of the Organization of American States using the medium of
radio;
That international audiences have been able to closely follow the
activities and events held at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C.,
thanks to the prolific efforts of the Voice of the OAS;
That over the past 50 years the Voice of the OAS has served as a bridge
to the major stations of Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and the
United States of America, with broadcasts of news and reports, and as a
means of disseminating and promoting the cultural values of the
countries of the Hemisphere;
That over 50 years the contributions of the Voice of the OAS have been
recognized by numerous international, government, and journalistic
institutions, and by citizens in general;
That radio continues to be the mass communication medium with widest
reach across the Hemisphere, with the advent of the latest information
technologies providing a significant boost,
RESOLVES:
1. To acknowledge the efforts undertaken over the past 50 years by the
Voice of the OAS, a subdivision of the Radio and Television Section of
the Department of Press and Communications of the Organization.
2. To recognize the importance of the role performed by OAS Radio in
promoting the activities of the Organization of American States.
3. To recommend that the Secretary General continue providing this
important OAS communication vehicle with the means it needs to provide
the best possible services.
4. To congratulate the General Secretariat and the staff of the Voice of
the OAS for its achievements during the 50 years of its existence.
