GRANTING THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA THE STATUS OF
PERMANENT OBSERVER TO THE ORGANIZATION
THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,
HAVING SEEN the request from the Government of the People’s Republic
of China to be granted the status of permanent observer to the
Organization of American States (CP/doc.3860/04) and the report of the
Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs on the matter
(CP/CAJP-2192/04); and
CONSIDERING:
That through resolution AG/RES. 50 (I-O/71), “Permanent Observers to
the Organization of American States,” the General Assembly established
the status of permanent observer to the Organization of American States
and assigned to the Permanent Council the task of determining the
criteria and timing for awarding it; and
That, under resolution CP/RES. 407 (573/84), “Revised Procedures for
Granting the Status of Permanent Observer,” any independent state may
request the status of permanent observer to the Organization of American
States,
RESOLVES:
1. To grant the People’s Republic of China the status of permanent
observer to the Organization of American States, pursuant to General
Assembly resolution AG/RES. 50 (I-O/71) and Permanent Council resolution
CP/RES. 407 (573/84).
2. To invite the Government of the People’s Republic of China to
accredit a permanent observer to the organs, agencies, and entities of
the Organization, in keeping with operative paragraph 7 of resolution
CP/RES. 407 (573/84).
3. To request the Secretary General to advise the organs, agencies,
and entities of the Organization, including the inter-American
specialized organizations, of this decision, once the Government of the
People’s Republic of China has been apprised thereof.
