VOTE OF THANKS TO THE
PEOPLE AND GOVERNMENT OF CHILE
THE PERMANENT COUNCIL
OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,
CONSIDERING:
That the thirty-third regular session of the General Assembly was held in
Santiago, Chile, on June 8, 9, and 10, 2003;
That, during the closing session, all delegations expressed their thanks to the
people and Government of Chile for their warm and generous hospitality, and in
particular to His Excellency the President of the Republic, Dr. Ricardo Lagos,
for the invaluable guidance he provided during his inaugural speech; and
That on the same occasion well-deserved recognition was expressed to the
President of the General Assembly at its thirty-third regular session, Her
Excellency María Soledad Alvear, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, for her
effective and efficient direction of the discussions, which ensured the
adoption of important declarations and resolutions, and to the staff of the
Permanent Mission of Chile to the OAS and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Chile, who were instrumental in making the General Assembly session a success,
RESOLVES:
1. To express its appreciation to the people and Government of the Republic of
Chile for their warm and generous hospitality and for their contribution to the
successful outcome of the thirty-third regular session of the OAS General
Assembly; and, most especially, to acknowledge and underscore the invaluable
guidance provided by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Dr. Ricardo
Lagos, in his inaugural speech, "Democratic Governance in the Americas."
2. Likewise, to express appreciation and congratulations to Her Excellency María
Soledad Alvear, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, President of the General
Assembly at its thirty-third regular session, for her effective and efficient
direction of the discussions, which ensured the adoption of important
declarations and resolutions, among them the "Declaration of Santiago on
Democracy and Public Trust: A New Commitment to Good Governance for the
Americas" and the resolution "Program for Democratic Governance in the
Americas"; to Ambassador Esteban Tomic, Permanent Representative of Chile to
the OAS; and to the staff of the Permanent Mission of Chile to the OAS and of
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country, who were instrumental in
making the General Assembly session a success.
